European Parliament Vice-President calls for launch of political negotiations, opening of all clusters with Moldova

European Parliament Vice-President Victor Negrescu is calling for the launch of political negotiations and the opening of all negotiation clusters with Moldova. He said that he had sent a letter to this effect to the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

"Moldova has made remarkable progress in an extremely difficult regional context. It is time for the European Union to respond with bold political decisions and to send a clear signal to the citizens of Moldova: their future is in Europe," Victor Negrescu said.

The request was made following a string of meetings and events held in recent days at the European Parliament, dedicated to strengthening relations between the EU and Moldova.

The European official announced that he had had a meeting with a high-level delegation of Moldovan parliamentarians, including deputy parliament speakers and heads of key parliamentary commissions, in the context of implementing the new cooperation agreement between the European Parliament and the parliament of Moldova. According to him, the bilateral partnership is becoming increasingly solid and concrete.

"I had a very good meeting with a high-level delegation of parliamentarians from Moldova, including deputy parliament speakers and heads of the main parliamentary committees, as a follow-up to the new cooperation agreement between the European Parliament and the parliament of Moldova. As the vice-president responsible for relations with Moldova, I am pleased to see that our partnership is becoming stronger and more concrete," Negrescu said.

The Vice-President of the European Parliament specified that he hosted, in Brussels, together with the Minister of Labour and representatives of non-governmental organizations, an event dedicated to children from Moldova and Romania.

"I am happy that, through the amendments I have promoted, I have managed to include support for the financing of concrete actions dedicated to children in the Growth Plan for Moldova, as well as specific funds for all European children in the European Parliament's proposal regarding the future EU budget," the official said.

Negrescu noted that he also had discussed with the Deputy Parliament Speaker of Moldova Doina Gherman, as well as with Secretary-General of the Government Alexei Buzu about the next steps in the European integration process.

"Following these discussions, I continued my efforts to accelerate the European path of Moldova. In light of what was discussed, I sent a letter to the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union requesting the launch of political negotiations and the opening of all negotiation clusters," he added.

Negrescu reiterated that Moldova is and remains one of his priorities in his work as Vice-President of the European Parliament, given its strategic importance for Romania.

A delegation of Moldova’s parliament is paying a visit to the European Parliament on June 1-3. The delegation includes Deputy Parliament Speakers Doina Gherman and Vlad Batrancea, as well as the chairs of the 12 standing parliamentary commissions.

The visit's agenda includes discussions on the progress of Moldova in the European integration process, the institutional implications of the EU enlargement negotiations and the strengthening of cooperation between the parliament of Moldova and the European Parliament.

During the meetings in Brussels, the head of the commission for European integration, Marcel Spatari, and the head of the commission for economy, budget and finance, Radu Marian, are taking part in debates on the EU enlargement strategy and its impact on candidate states.

At the same time, the head of the Legal Commission, Veronica Rosca, and the head of the commission for human rights and interethnic relations, Grigore Novac, are participating in discussions dedicated to the recommendations made by the ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) election observation mission after the parliamentary elections of September 28, 2025.

The visit takes place after the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the parliament of Moldova and the European Parliament and aims to deepen the relations between the two institutions, in the context of the EU accession process, as well as to strengthen mechanisms for supporting democracy. The closing session will be attended by the Deputy Parliament Speakers Doina Gherman and Vlad Batrancea, together with Vice-President of the European Parliament Nicolae Stefanuta.
