Moldovan MPs discuss opening EU accession negotiations in Brussels

Moldova has received a new signal of support in Brussels for opening chapter-by-chapter negotiations with the European Union, Deputy Parliament Speaker Doina Gherman has said. The statement was made in the context of a fact-finding visit to the European Parliament by a Moldovan parliament’s delegation.

The deputy speaker said that Moldova had registered “significant and accelerated progress” in preparations for accession to the European Union and emphasized the existence of a “unified political will” at the institutional level, as well as public support for the country’s European path.

The delegation includes the chairs of all parliamentary committees. During the visit, Moldovan officials are scheduled to have meetings with representatives of the European Commission, the European External Action Service and the Council of the European Union. The discussions focus on the reforms implemented in Moldova, the EU accession process, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

The Moldovan delegation will also hold meetings with Vice Presidents of the European Parliament, Nicolae Stefanuta and Victor Negrescu, as well as with MEPs involved in the European Union’s enlargement file.

Moldova submitted its application for accession to the European Union on March 3, 2022, and on June 23, 2022 it got candidate country status, with a recommendation to continue reforms. In November 2023, European assessments confirmed Moldova’s progress and recommended the opening of accession negotiations, a decision approved by EU leaders in December 2023. On June 25,  2024, the accession negotiations officially started.

In September 2025, Moldova completed the bilateral screening with the EU – a stage that assesses the compatibility of national legislation with the European acquis. In mid-December 2025, the country launched technical discussions on the first negotiation chapters. The Moldovan authorities have stressed that this stage marked a crucial phase of the accession negotiations, which will underpin future progress in Moldova’s process of integration into the EU.
