Head of State: Goal remains same. Moldova aims to sign EU accession treaty by 2028

The Republic of Moldova aims to sign the treaty of accession to the European Union by 2028. State institutions are working to achieve results in this regard. The statement was made today by President Maia Sandu during a joint press conference with Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas.

The president stressed that she would like the decision on formally opening accession negotiations to be taken as soon as possible.

“Our goal remains the same. The commitment remains exactly the same: to sign the treaty of accession to the European Union by 2028. We are working to achieve results in this regard,” Maia Sandu said.

Kaja Kallas emphasized that the Republic of Moldova must advance as quickly as possible and make use of this window of opportunity.

“It is important to move forward in order to achieve this enlargement as quickly as possible. It is a window of opportunity that we must take advantage of, because it might close at some point,” the European official noted.

Kaja Kallas is paying an official visit to Chișinău on 7–8 May. During the visit, the official held meetings focused on security and defence, including with Minister of Defence Anatolie Nosatîi and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi.

The agenda also includes discussions with Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, representatives of civil society, as well as participation in EuroQuiz together with young people from across the country.
