Igor Grosu, Alexandr Stoianoglo officially registered in race for Moldovan parliament speaker office

The special commission for organizing the election of the parliament speaker has  announced the official registration of two candidates for this position. Following the examination of the submitted files and verifying the compliance with legal requirements, the registration certificates were issued for Igor Grosu, nominated by the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) faction, and for Alexandr Stoianoglo, designated by the Alternative parliamentary faction.

Veronica Rosca, the chair of the special commission, said that the decision had been made after analyzing the decisions of the factions and the written agreements of the candidates. The commission found that the files are complete and compliant with the requirements stipulated by the parliament's regulations.

According to the procedure, after the official registration, the candidates for the position of parliament speaker were presented to the plenum.

Igor Grosu delivered a speech in front of fellow lawmakers, noting that Moldova  must become part of the European family by 2028.

“It is the duty of our generation not to miss the chance for European integration. Thank you for your honest vote, maintaining the developmental direction that  Moldova embarked upon. The vote on September 28 is clear proof that people want to live in peace and prosperity, among European countries,” Grosu said.

He emphasized that the new parliament faces four years of “challenges,” in which it must prove that Moldova is a European country, ready to join the European Union.

“We commit to signing the Accession Treaty to the European Union by 2028, before the end of President Maia Sandu's second term. Moldova is ready to advance in accession negotiations. I know the road is not easy, but when we, Moldovans, believe in something, we are unstoppable. This is a unique opportunity – to become the parliament of European integration,” he affirmed.

In his speech, Igor Grosu said that the new legislature's priorities would be improving the living standards, modernizing public institutions, supporting the economy and industrializing agriculture.

“We aim to raise living standards, modernize institutions and make investments that ensure economic growth. In the coming years, with the support of our European friends, we will build roads and hospitals, modernize schools and universities. We will stimulate exports and the development of our companies. We have a real chance to transform Moldova into what has not been achieved in the last 30 years,” said Grosu.

The PAS president also sent a message of unity to the opposition, calling for cooperation and shared responsibility.

“Let's commit to governing for all citizens, regardless of whom they voted for. I urge you to build bridges between us and work for the common good of Moldova. The European path is not the one of PAS or any particular party. It is the decision of the citizens of Moldova and we must work for what they have chosen,” concluded Igor Grosu.

After the speech, Igor Grosu answered questions put by deputies.

Alexandr Stoianoglo gave a brief speech, urging deputies towards unity and cooperation.

“First of all, I sincerely thank my colleagues from the Alternative faction for their trust in nominating me for the position of parliament speaker of Moldova. I am aware of the predictable outcome of today's vote, but I see this moment not as a competition, but as an important step towards consolidating the political dialogue and democratic balance in our country. The opposition needs space, respect, and the real possibility to exercise its constitutional role. Today, we make a symbolic, but significant gesture – demonstrating that in Moldova, mutual respect can exist between the majority and the opposition, and that we can build a parliament where different opinions are not seen as a threat, but as a resource for democracy. We are undoubtedly facing difficult debates and open contradictions, but through these processes, we can build a mature political culture based on balance, transparency, and respect for voters – those standing behind each faction. I am convinced that, through joint efforts, the parliamentary opposition can truly assume its segment of responsibility – especially in essential areas, such as the work of the media, the activity of the Central Electoral Commission and the control of public institutions. Time is ripe for the opposition to prove political maturity, unity and the ability to act constructively, not fragmented. Therefore, I call on all fellow deputies: to abandon the practice of sterile confrontations, of constantly searching for political enemies. The country needs stability, cooperation and solutions,” Stoianoglo opined.

According to the procedure, the parliament speaker will be elected by secret ballot. A special commission made up of 11 members has been established for organizing the election. It includes six representatives from the PAS faction and one member designated by each of the other five opposition parliamentary factions.
