Moldovan energy minister inspects works at Chisinau Electric Station

The modernization works at the Chisinau Electric Station are advancing rapidly, and Moldova is nearing the most important stage in the process of strengthening critical energy infrastructure. Acting Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu has made statements to this effect. The official visited the Chisinau Electric Station, in order to inspect how the works are proceeding.

The minister emphasized that the teams of workers and engineers were working every day to complete the project as soon as possible.

“I inspected the Chișinău Electric Station on October 23, where modernization works are progressing intensely. I spoke with teams of workers and engineers who are working daily to complete the project as soon as possible. I stressed that, as a country, we are nearing the most important stage in the process of strengthening the critical energy infrastructure. It is crucial that all teams involved continue the intense pace of work, in order to achieve this strategic goal,” the minister stated.

At the Chisinau Electric Station, where the future Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line will connect, works are currently underway on the installation of autotransformer no. 1 – radiators, fans, insulating bushings and measurement transformers, with the next stage being oil filling. Simultaneously, the setting of 330 and 400 kV support insulators has been completed and the protection equipment has already been delivered to the site.

According to the Energy Ministry, the progress of equipment production and delivery is currently at approximately 93 per cent and the execution documentation is completed at 90 per cent.

At the same time, at the other end of the line, at the Vulcanesti Electric Station, the foundation works are completed, metal structures are being mounted and teams continue the installation of the grounding outlets.

Minister Dorin Junghietu on October 23 said that the 400 kV Energy Independence Line Vulcanesti–Chisinau, the largest energy infrastructure project in recent decades, was over 90 per cent completed.

The works of construction of the Vulcanesti-Chișinău overhead power line started in April 2024 and are part of the Electricity Network Development Project, financed by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros is for the line’s construction.

The Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead power line, spanning 157 km, will include over 500 towers and 1,500 km of conductors on the three phases, creating a strategic link between the south and center of Moldova. Depending on the electricity system regime, the line can ensure the transit of a flow of up to 630 MVA of power, which could meet 50 per cent of the energy demand during peak consumption periods.

The construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line is a strategically important project for the energy security of our country. The new power line will allow the transport of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau, without passing through the Moldovan power plant located in the Transnistrian region.
