Citizens of Moldova prefer to keep their savings in Moldovan lei. In last September, deposits in the national currency amounted to 3.4 billion lei, increasing by 10 percent compared to the previous month, accounting for a 74.9 percent share, according to data by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM).
At the same time, deposits in foreign currency amounted to 1.14 billion lei in September 2025, down by 3.8 per cent against the month before.
Thus, in total, new term deposits exceeded 4.5 billion lei in last September, increasing by 6.2 percent compared to August.
According to the BNM, from the perspective of placement terms, the largest shares were for deposits with terms of 2 to 5 years (57 percent) and from 6 to 12 months (24.5 percent).
Deposits from individuals amounted to 3.3 billion lei in September. Compared to September 2024, individual deposits in the national currency increased by 60.1 per cent, while the ones in foreign currency grew by 12.7 per cent.
Meanwhile, in September 2025, deposits from businesses amounted to 1.2 billion lei. BNM’s data reveal that corporate deposits in the national currency increased 3.3 times, while the in foreign currency decreased by 32.4 per cent compared to September 2024.
