Moldova's Foreign Minister: Truth and education most powerful tools for defending democracy
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi participated in the 43rd session of UNESCO General Conference, and reiterated Moldova's commitment to peace, education, culture and respect for diversity.
According to the ministry, in his speech, he emphasized the importance of international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy in a time marked by crises and global transformations.
“Peace is not an abstract concept. It is at the core of UNESCO's mandate, and Moldova's commitment to peace, democracy, and human dignity is deep and unwavering,” said Popșoi.
The official condemned the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine, highlighting its impact on the international order and the lives of millions of people. He mentioned Moldova's efforts in managing the influx of refugees, prioritizing the protection of children and ensuring their access to education and social services.
Popșoi drew attention to the dangers of informational manipulation and malign external influences, including in the Transnistrian region.
“In times of crisis and uncertainty, truth and education become the most powerful tools for defending democracy,” the deputy prime minister asserted, emphasizing UNESCO's role in promoting media education, critical thinking, and press freedom.
Popșoi appreciated UNESCO's contribution to protecting world cultural heritage, the ethical use of artificial intelligence, environmental education, and the conservation of Gagauz culture and language. He also reiterated Moldova's desire to deepen cooperation with the organization, including by promoting national dossiers for the inclusion of the underground wineries Cricova and Mileștii Mici on the World Heritage List.
“Even small states have a voice and can contribute to shaping UNESCO's direction,” he said.
Our country's participation in the General Conference confirms Moldova's commitment to supporting UNESCO's values and actively contributing to an international order based on peace, dialogue and mutual respect.
