Moldova's Action and Solidarity Party to put forward new candidate for PM's office; name to be announced after consultations with President Maia Sandu
The president of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), Igor Grosu, has announced that PAS already had a candidate for the position of prime minister. Yet, he noted that the name would be made public after official consultations with President Maia Sandu. The PAS leader said that current Prime Minister Dorin Recean was ending his term, and the new government would be a pro-European one, supported by the party's parliamentary majority.
‘’I know that a natural question you are expecting is related to the name of the future candidate for prime minister. It is a legitimate question and a natural expectation. At the same time, please understand that, at this moment, I cannot make this announcement. However, what I can tell you is that the Action and Solidarity Party will participate in the consultations with the president at the appropriate time, during which we will present the candidate we consider fit for the office of prime minister,’’ Igor Grosu said.
The PAS leader emphasized that the new government would be firmly pro-European, supported by the parliamentary majority got by the party.
‘’We want a government supported by a clearly pro-European parliamentary majority, represented by the Action and Solidarity Party’s faction. At the same time, other parties represented in parliament will, of course, have the opportunity and suitable conditions to support Moldova and the future government in the European integration process. That is what matters most at this moment—that Moldova continues its European path,’’ Grosu noted.
As for the composition of the future cabinet, the PAS president said that the party would rely on continuity wherever institutions performed.
‘’Our principle is simple and clear: where things have gone well and there are results, we must ensure the continuity of the reforms and processes underway. Of course, it is important to also listen to the opinion of the candidate for prime minister. Only after these consultations, will we be able to provide more clarity concerning the composition of the future cabinet of ministers,’’ the PAS leader specified.
Grosu also touched upon the period of collaboration with Prime Minister Dorin Recean, whom he thanked for his efforts.
‘’There were two and a half years full of challenges, but also significant achievements. Mr. Recean's experience was hugely valuable. He knew how to mobilize institutions, unite the governmental team, and lead Moldova with responsibility and dignity, keeping it upright and free on the path to European integration. We thank him for his dedication, for his work and for the courage with which he carried forward our common project—a European Moldova,’’ the PAS president said.
Grosu reaffirmed the party's commitment to continuing the European way of Moldova:
‘’All these results were possible thanks to a mobilized, courageous society, both at home and abroad. People who believed in their country and worked together for a better future. Moldova moves forward—free, dignified and European.’’
At the parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025, the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) got an absolute majority in parliament. According to the Central Electoral Commission, PAS secured 50.20% of the votes, granting it 55 mandates out of a total of 101 seats in the legislature. Other formations that exceeded the electoral threshold and made it to parliament are: Patriotic Bloc - 26 mandates, Alternative Electoral Bloc - eight mandates, Our Party - six mandates and Democracy at Home Party - six mandates.
