Moldovan parliament speaker says Roberta Metsola's return to parliament confirms EU’s steady support for Moldova

The future of Moldova is European, and the support of European institutions stays essential for Moldova's pro-European path. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect at the meeting held in parliament, in the presence of the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, on an official visit to Chisinau.

“Three years ago, in this hall, you delivered a speech to the 11th legislature and to the Moldovans. Your message was clear: Moldova’s place is in Europe. Our future is to be together, and the European Parliament will do whatever is necessary to stand by the Moldovans on their path to becoming a European Union member state,” said Igor Grosu.

The speaker of the legislature also said that, three years later, Roberta Metsola’s return to parliament confirmed the European Union's constant support for Moldova.

“Welcome back to the parliament of Moldova, dear Roberta Metsola, welcome to a European Moldova. We have withstood a complicated period for the European continent and managed to become a model of resilience. We have a pro-European majority parliament, President Maia Sandu was re-elected, Moldovans voted for the European Union in the 2024 referendum.”

Igor Grosu also noted the external challenges faced by Moldova.

“We have withstood an unprecedented hybrid attack on behalf of the Russian Federation and criminal groups. We have overcome all these, because we are not alone, because we are supported by friends. Our proverb says that a friend in need is a friend indeed, and the European Parliament has indeed been alongside us.”

He highlighted the progress made by Moldova, as reflected in the recent report of the European Commission.

“It shows that we have made significant steps in justice, energy, education, digitalization and regional development. We know we have much work to do, but our role is clear: we continue the European path and will bring Moldova into the large European political family. This parliament stays firmly committed to defending European values: democracy, peace and the rule of law. For us, there is no other path. Moldova's future is Europe.”

Moldova is Europe, said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in the parliament’s plenum, reiterating the political support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union. The high European official is visiting Moldova and delivered a speech in the Parliament on the occasion of the establishment of the 12th Legislature.

 

During her visit to Chisinau, Roberta Metsola had meetings with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, gave a joint press conference with the head of state, and attend an event dedicated to youth at the Spiru Haret Theoretical Lyceum.
