Siegfried Mureșan: Historic moment for European future of the Republic of Moldova: preparations start for opening cluster negotiations
The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union announced last night that the Republic of Moldova has fulfilled all the necessary conditions and preparations are beginning for the opening of cluster negotiations with the Republic of Moldova, starting with Cluster 1 – Fundamental Values. The European Parliament states that it supports the Republic of Moldova with technical and political assistance and with everything that is needed.
MEP Siegfried Mureșan says that the decision confirms the progress made by the authorities in Chișinău in recent years.
According to him, in the coming period the technical and political procedures that will allow the official opening of the cluster negotiations are to be finalized.
“It is the moment we have all been waiting for, especially the people of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, in the next few days the process that will allow the opening of the negotiations will be completed,” Mureșan declared.
The MEP says that the announcement of the Cypriot Presidency reflects the results of the reforms implemented by the Republic of Moldova, despite the pressure coming from the Russian Federation.
“In spite of unprecedented acts of aggression and blackmail from the Russian Federation, the Republic of Moldova has continued on its European path and has become a frontrunner among the candidate states in implementing reforms,” he said.
Siegfried Mureșan noted that the European Parliament has considered the Republic of Moldova ready for more than a year to open cluster negotiations and has consistently supported accelerating the process.
“After a year of pressure from our side, the Council is one step away from opening the cluster negotiations,” the MEP added.
He emphasized that the European Parliament will continue to support the Republic of Moldova both politically and technically on its European path.
“We in the European Parliament continue to stand by the Republic of Moldova, with technical support, with political support and with everything that is necessary. Because a Republic of Moldova irreversibly anchored in the European Union is, first and foremost, in the economic and security interest of everyone: of Romania, of all the member states and, not least, of the Republic of Moldova. The Republic of Moldova will be together with us in the European Union,” Mureșan concluded.
The Republic of Moldova has received a new confirmation of the advancement of its European course, after the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union launched, on the evening of June 3, the preparations for the official opening of Cluster 1 in the accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
