Educational mediator to be set up in schools to facilitate Roma children integration

Educational mediator will be set up in Moldovan schools to facilitate the integration of Roma children into the education system. The proposal is part of a pilot project presented by the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), in partnership with UNICEF Moldova.

According to MEC, the first specialists are expected to operate in Otaci and Soroca, areas with a low rate of school inclusion for Roma children.

The project stipulates that the educational mediator will facilitate communication between the school, family and community, monitor school attendance and participation in classes by Roma students, thus contributing to preventing dropout, school absenteeism and combating bullying. The educational mediator will also contribute to the active involvement of parents in their children's education.

Attending the project launch event, head of the interethnic relations policy service of MEC Ivan Duminica said that the inclusion of Roma children in the educational system is supported by public policies, sustainable partnerships and efficient monitoring mechanisms.

“Only through genuine collaboration between authorities, civil society, local communities and international partners can we create an equitable and inclusive educational environment for all children,” said Duminica.

The event took place during the Roma History and Culture Week (April 2-8), which concludes on International Roma Day, celebrated annually on 8 April.
