Governor of Gagauzia released from prison, placed under house arrest

Magistrates from Chisinau have ruled to replace the preventive arrest measure with house arrest in the case of Governor (bashkan) of Gagauzia Evghenia Gutul.

According to the judges' decision, the new restrictive measure will be enforced for a period of 30 days. Thus, Gutul will not be able to perform her official duties on this period.

Evghenia Gutul was detained at the Chisinau International Airport, from where she intended to fly to Istanbul. The criminal file against her was opened for violating the management of financial means from electoral funds, illegal financing of electoral competitors, document forger, and false declarations, in the context of the 2023 elections.

While in detention, the governor of Gagauzia addressed messages to international leaders, such as Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Donald Trump, accusing authorities of political persecution.
