Moldovan government approves draft decision: new Moldova-Romania border crossing point to be created
A new border crossing point will be created between Moldova and Romania. It concerns the Ungheni–Ungheni checkpoint, which will be connected to the bridge over the Prut River and to the European roads’ network. A draft government decision to this effect was approved today.
Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin emphasized that the new crossing point would facilitate the movement of people and the transport of goods. It will also support economic exchanges between the two countries and the member states of the European Union.
“In recent times, traffic between Moldova and Romania has increased and the existing checkpoints are crowded, which leads to long waiting times at the border. Thus, through this protocol, the legal framework is created for opening a new crossing point, connected to the bridge over the Prut and to the European roads’ network. This is necessary, in order to reduce congestion at the border and to ensure a faster and more efficient crossing,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin.
The establishment of the border crossing point comes after, on April 26, 2025, in Ungheni, construction began on the road bridge over the Prut River, symbolically named the Bridge of Flowers, which will connect the two banks of the Prut River.
