Moldovan National Public health Agency announces new cases of swine fever in Cahul and Straseni districts

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) announces new outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF), recorded in the Cahul and Straseni districts.

“During March 27 - April 2, two outbreaks of African swine fever and one of rabies outbreak were recorded in Moldova. They include an ASF outbreak in domestic pigs in Tataresti, Cahul district; an ASF outbreak in wild boars in Lozova, Straseni district; and one rabies outbreak in a cat in Climautii de Jos, Soldanesti district. Quarantine measures have been introduced in the ASF outbreaks and protection and surveillance areas were established. Specialists are controlling wild reservoirs, animal movements within the country and screening domestic pigs and wild boar populations,” explains ANSA.

At the same time, in the case of the two ASF outbreaks recorded in mid-March at two large farms, ANSA announces the completion of eradication measures, with all pigs slaughtered in these farms.

“Currently, cleaning and decontamination works are underway. On this period, an ASF hotbed and a highly pathogenic avian influenza hotbed from the country have also been eradicated,” the source states.

The National Food Safety Agency warns that the risk of ASF outbreaks, both in domestic pigs and wild boars, stays a threat and urges the residents and all farmers not to use animal-origin food scraps for feeding pigs and to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures, in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
