Over 720,000 families received heating compensation in March

In March, over 720,000 families received monetary compensation for heating. The maximum amount was 1,400 lei. 578 million lei were allocated from the state budget to this end. Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu unveiled the data today.

According to the official, the average compensation for March was 805 lei. Additionally, for November – March, the average payment was 772 lei.

'In March, over 720,000 families, comprising 1.5 million people, benefited from compensations. More than 339,000 families using solid fuel for heating, about 216,000 families using natural gas, 127,000 – thermal agent, and 36,000 families – electricity benefited from the aid', said Alexei Buzu.

The official noted that Help on Meter initiative is the largest program managed by the country's government. Thus, in the current cold season, the authorities allocated a total budget of 2 billion 690 million lei. Out of the total amount, 1 billion 150 million lei have been provided by partner countries, mainly European Union countries.

'I want to sincerely thank all the countries that rallied and helped us implement this important program for citizens. It is about: Germany, Sweden, Norway, Italy, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia and Slovakia. This support is extremely important to us', Buzu said.

In this cold season, social workers registered over 400,000 citizens in the program. Operators answered a total of 136,000 phone calls, 31,000 electronic messages, and 1,300 citizens were received for audience at the ministry. Also, 12,173 vulnerable families benefited from vouchers worth over 6,000 lei to purchase energy-efficient equipment.

'This program is transparent, simple and honest. A recent survey showed that about 66% of citizens have a positive view of this program. We are happy to have successfully implemented it. The government was committed to covering energy tariff increases. We are glad we have succeeded and have shown that Moldova can', he said.

The official said that this was the last month in which citizens received monetary compensation for heating. However, all families in the country will continue to benefit from electricity compensation.

'The government, with support from the European Union, will offer universal compensations to all families in the Republic of Moldova to cover electricity tariff increases. This covers the period from February – December 2025. Families will be protected from electricity tariff increases. Many have already found the compensations in their bills', Buzu said.

Compensations will cover the difference between the regulated price and the reference price, up to a maximum ceiling of 1.84 lei/kWh, applicable to the quantity of energy consumed monthly, which will not exceed the limit of 110 kWh per consumption point. According to authorities, 110 kWh represents 80% of the average monthly electricity consumption for a family. The aid will be provided to all families, regardless of whether they have registered in the compensation system.

The provision of electricity compensations for all household consumers in the Republic of Moldova is carried out within the financial support package announced by the European Union for 2025.

The government is offering energy compensations for vulnerable households for the third consecutive year. The compensations are offered for the cold season of the year, which includes November-March.
