Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES: Railway tourism, new opportunity to promote country – picturesque journeys through villages, vineyards, authentic landscapes
The railway tourism is gaining increasing popularity in Europe, being appreciated by tourists for the relaxed pace of travel and the opportunity to discover authentic landscapes.
In the context, Moldova is starting to be explored more and more often from the perspective of a different tourist experience – a train journey through rural areas, traditional villages and vast vineyards, offering visitors an authentic picture of the country.
Authorities in the railway transport sector believe that this type of tourism can become an important element in promoting local destinations, especially at a time when more and more travelers are looking for authentic, peaceful experiences close to nature.
A recent example of the growing interest in railway tourism of Moldova is the excursion organized on March 6-7, 2026, for the team of a company from the Czech Republic, specialized in railway transport and tourism. The visit aimed to explore the tourism potential of the country’s railway infrastructure and to identify possible projects or tourist routes that could be developed in the future.
The delegation’s agenda included a visit to the railway station in Chisinau and to the depots of the state enterprise, Railway of Moldova, where participants had the opportunity to become familiar with the railway infrastructure, the day-to-day activity of the rail transport system and the specific features of the railway network of Moldova. Representatives of the Czech company analyzed how railway services operate, as well as their potential for developing tourism products dedicated to topic-related or panoramic journeys.
Afterwards, the participants continued their experience with a railway journey through more regions of the country, crossing rural areas, plains, traditional localities and wine regions. The route gave them the opportunity to notice the natural landscapes and the authentic character of local communities, elements that can be an attraction for tourists interested in cultural and gastronomic experiences.
According to representatives of the state enterprise, Railway of Moldova, railway transport is not just a means of travel, but can become an integral part of the tourist experience. Unlike other types of transport, traveling by train allows tourists to admire landscapes at a slow pace, discover lesser-known localities and enjoy the distinctive atmosphere of the regions they pass through.
The development of railway tourism could, at the same time, contribute to diversifying the tourism offer of Moldova, to enhancing the country’s natural and cultural heritage and to attracting a new segment of visitors from Europe and other regions.
Representatives of the Railway of Moldova say that such initiatives can play an important role in promoting the country’s image as an authentic and accessible tourist destination. In this regard, the institution expresses its openness to collaborations with tour operators and international companies interested in developing railway tourism projects, including in view of the upcoming summer tourist season.
The competent authorities believe that capitalizing on railway infrastructure for tourism purposes could turn the train into an attractive way to discover Moldova, offering travelers a different experience that combines mobility, natural landscapes and direct contact with local traditions.
