Chisinau, 9 December /MOLDPRES/ – A liaison office of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will be set up in Chisinau, according to an Agreement ratified today by Parliament.

At the parliament sitting, Socialists’ party of Moldova (PSRM) and Communists’ party of Moldova (PCRM) pronounced against document ratification. Later, communist Parliament members, in protest, left the Parliament. As such, ratification was supported by Democratic party of Moldova (PDM), Liberal democratic party of Moldova (PLDM), Liberal party of Moldova (PL) and independent MPs.

NATO Liaison Office Agreement was signed on 29 November 2016 in Brussels, at Prime Minister Pavel Filip’s meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Opening NATO Liaison Office aims to exploit the potential of cooperation with the Alliance by implementing existing initiatives, a communication about NATO programs and new projects achieved with Alliance support.

According to document, the Office could be inaugurated in spring 2017. At the same time, opening of NATO Liaison Office does not contradict with Moldova’s neutral status.

NATO Liaison Offices were created and exist in Ukraine, countries of Central Asia and the Russian Federation.
