New actions of commemorating Holocaust victims to be organised in Moldovan parliament

Chisinau, 15 March /MOLDPRES/- New actions of commemorating Holocaust victims will be organized in parliament on 16-17 March, the parliament’s communications and public relations department has reported.

The parliament will host a photo exhibition “In memory of Holocaust victims”, illustrating persecution and extermination of Jews during the World War II including in Moldova. Books are from the funds of the National Library of Moldova, and the photo collection presents materials from the archives of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Holocaust Memorial in Germany, Jewish Documentation Centre in Italy etc.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on 16 March at 9:30.  Attending the event will be MPs, ministers, diplomats, experts and representatives of civil society.

Achievements recorded by Moldova in Holocaust awareness, obstacles existing in regulating and implementing, as well as priorities for the next years will be discussed at a roundtable “Remembering the Holocaust in Moldova: progress and prospects”. The event will take place on 17 March and will bring together representatives of state institutions, development partners and civil society.

The actions of commemorating the Holocaust victims are organized with the support of Hebrew Community in Moldova and the US Embassy in Chisinau.

The parliament approved in July 2016 the Declaration on acceptance of Final Report of the International Commission chaired by Elie Wiesel on study of Holocaust, and established 27 January as national day of commemorating Holocaust victims. On 25 January 2017, the government approved an action plan to promote commemoration and studying Holocaust in Moldova. In February the parliament hosted the book launch “Ghetto of Chisinau 1941-1942”, signed by Paul Shapiro, director of new Office for International Relations of the Holocaust Museum in Washington.
