Moldovan parliament hosts exhibition of books, photos in memory of Holocaust victims

Chisinau, 16 March /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament today hosted an exhibition of books and photos titled, In Memory of the Holocaust Victims. The collection shows the persecution and extermination of Jews during the World War II, including of the present territory of Moldova.  

The books are from the funds of the Chisinau-based B.P. Hasdeu Municipal Library, Itic Mangher branch, which holds an impressive collection of volumes on the subject of the Holocaust. The collection of photos presents materials of the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Holocaust Memorial from Germany, the Contemporary Jewish Documentation Centre of Italy, etc.      

“We should remember the sufferings hundreds of thousands of people went through, as only in this way we will learn lessons, so that the horrors of this kind never repeat,” Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu said at the inauguration of the exhibition.  

United States Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit appreciated that Moldova had made significant progress in the promotion of actions to commemorate and study the Holocaust.

“Moldova’s efforts in fighting anti-Semitism are worth being praised. This exhibition is a step made towards the opening of a museum in the memory of the Holocaust victims in Chisinau,” the American diplomat noted.   

For his part, Chairman of the Jewish Community Alexandr Bilinkis welcomed the actions undertaken by the parliament to get aware of the consequences of the Holocaust.  

Attending the event were MPs, government representatives, diplomats, experts, representatives of the civil society, as well as victims of the Holocaust. The exhibition will be open during one week in the parliament.

The event was organized by the Jewish Community from Moldova and the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau.
