Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ - The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) has informed that the validation of the strategy of recovery of the funds embezzled from the three problem banks is planned for July 2017, following the next round of consultations with experts of Kroll and Steptoe & Johnson, due to carry out a mission to Chisinau.

According to a BNM press release, “the companies Kroll and Steptoe & Johnson presented, in April 2017, a draft strategy to initiate actions in many jurisdictions, in order to get, in continuation, information and recover the assets embezzled. Presently, the strategy is in the course of being revised at the competent authorities of Moldova and is scheduled to be soon implemented.”

The Central Bank also said that it had not yet received a final report of the Kroll investigation, which is underway. After receiving the report, the National Bank of Moldova “will get involved in discussions with the Kroll company, in order to assess the opportunity to publish the findings of the investigation and lift the inherent restrictions of confidentiality. Meanwhile, the Kroll company will continue to regularly present informative notes to the National Bank of Moldova. For its part, the BNM will inform the public about the progress of the international investigation and the process of recovery of the money embezzled.”

BNM notes that it is very important that the confidentiality of the findings of the investigation and of the suggested actions in justice be preserved, in order to maximize the opportunities of recovery of the funds embezzled. Besides the starting of the stage of recovery of the assets, the additional investigation and analysis of the fraud will continue, in order to back the legal procedures underway and get as much clarity as possible and evidence about the beneficiaries of the fraud.
