Moldova denounces Agreement with Russian Federation
The Republic of Moldova will denounce the agreement with the Russian Federation on establishment and operation of cultural centers. An opinion in this regard was approved by the members of the foreign policy and European integration committee.
The document, signed in 1998, aimed to promote culture, history, and political, economic, and educational processes in both countries. However, the Ministry of Culture proposed denouncing the treaty, citing the current geopolitical context and the increased risk of misinformation. According to the institution, the agreement could be used by the Russian Federation to promote distorted narratives.
The Ministry of Culture reiterates that currently the Republic of Moldova does not have a cultural center on the territory of the Russian Federation. Consequently, there is no equitable mechanism for promoting information about the Republic of Moldova, which undermines the balance and the initial purpose of the agreement.
The denouncement of the agreement will be submitted for a vote in the Parliament.
