President: Negative emotions prevailed after Eurovision
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu believes that the reactions that appeared online after the score given by the Moldovan jury at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest revealed a dangerous tendency toward “immediate public execution,” which affects the social climate and discourages people from getting involved in public activities.
The statements were made during a TV show, following the controversy generated by the difference between the vote of the public in the Republic of Moldova, which awarded 12 points to Romania, and the vote of the jury, which gave only three points to Romania’s representative Alexandra Căpitănescu.
“I understand the disappointment of a part of society because of the score given by the jury from the Republic of Moldova,” Maia Sandu said, noting both the geopolitical dimension and the appreciation for the artistic performance of Romania’s team.
However, the head of state said that the reactions on social media went beyond the limits of a normal debate.
“What happened, the reaction to the jury’s score, was an immediate public execution, and we are seeing more and more such reactions online,” Maia Sandu said.
According to the president, social networks encourage impulsive and emotional reactions, and this phenomenon affects society’s ability to maintain a balanced dialogue.
“We cannot build a positive society, and we need optimism and appreciation,” the head of state said, adding that such reactions can demotivate those who choose to participate in or contribute to various public processes.
In the context of the debates over the Eurovision vote, Maia Sandu said that the contest results are influenced both by artistic performance and by geopolitical factors.
“There is a geopolitical component, and there is also artistic performance,” the president said, stressing that heated discussions around the scores do not bring real benefits.
The head of state also commented on the result obtained by singer Satoshi, who finished in eighth place in the contest. Maia Sandu said that the Republic of Moldova would have been capable of organizing the competition if the artist had won the trophy.
“We have shown in recent years that we can organize events in the best way, even major events,” the president said, referring to the 2023 European Political Community Summit held in Chișinău.
At the same time, Maia Sandu thanked Satoshi for promoting the image of the Republic of Moldova abroad and said that the artist’s participation could even help increase tourist interest in the country.
“We want EU member states to know us, because they are the ones who will vote on the Republic of Moldova’s accession,” the President of the Republic of Moldova declared.
