BUILDING MOLDOVA // New runway and terminal at Chișinău Airport
Chișinău International Airport Eugen Doga needs to be expanded, with the construction of a new runway and terminal being considered, along with the development of air cargo transportation. The investments could transform the Republic of Moldova into a regional hub in the process of rebuilding Ukraine. The message was conveyed by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, who presented several strategic projects today at Building Moldova event, dedicated to investments made through the Moldova Growth Plan, supported by the EU.
The official emphasized that Chișinău Airport currently serves two countries: the Republic of Moldova, with 2.5 million inhabitants, and Ukraine, with 31 million inhabitants.
“It is not an exaggeration when I say this. Approximately seven million citizens travel through the airport. Therefore, it needs to be expanded. We are considering the possibility of building a new runway and a new terminal,” said Vladimir Bolea.
The minister stressed that another insufficiently developed area is air cargo transportation.
“The Republic of Moldova has enormous potential in this regard. At the government level, the importance of developing this segment is understood in order to include our country as a regional hub in the process of rebuilding Ukraine. We must move very quickly to implement these projects. These are extremely important initiatives that will contribute to creating a large number of jobs across the country,” the deputy prime minister explained.
Chișinău International Airport Eugen Doga has recorded a significant increase in passenger traffic in recent years, which has heightened the need to modernize and expand its infrastructure. At the same time, the development of cargo services is considered an opportunity to diversify the airport’s operations and strengthen its role in regional freight transportation.
