BUILDING MOLDOVA // Moldova to have center for collection, processing of special waste
A center dedicated to the collection and processing of special waste will be built in Moldova. The 58.3 million-euros-worth project provides for the collection of more than 90,000 tons of waste, including batteries, chemicals and used household appliances. The initiative has been announced by Health Minister Alexandru Gasnas, who presented more strategic projects today at the “Construim Moldova” (Building Moldova) event, dedicated to investments carried out through the Growth Plan for Moldova, supported by the EU.
According to the official, the project is necessary, as waste discarded in unsuitable places ends up in the soil and water, affecting the environment.
“Health also depends on the environment in which we live. That is why, I would also like to present the project of my colleagues from the Environment Ministry, which targets the collection of special waste. We need a clean and healthy environment, because a significant amount of waste is discarded in unsuitable places and ends up in the soil and water, including the water we consume and the environment from which our food comes. Through an investment project worth 58.3 million euros, equivalent to more than one billion lei, we aim to collect 90,000 tons of special waste. This includes batteries, chemicals and old household appliances, which must be collected and properly managed,” Alexandru Gasnas said.
The minister emphasized that the construction of the center was scheduled to begin in 2028.
“The waste will be collected through public and mobile collection points and subsequently transported to the center dedicated to its collection and processing,” Alexandru Gasnas pointed out.
The authorities aim to strengthen the waste management system by developing waste collection and processing infrastructure. The measures are meant to reduce soil and water pollution, as well as protect public health and the environment.
