Giurgiulesti Passenger, Cargo Port to be expanded; Moldovan government establishes commission for declaring national public utility of works

The cabinet of ministers today approved the establishment of the Preliminary Research Commission for declaring the national public utility of works for the expansion of the Giurgiulesti Passenger and Cargo Port, which is managed by a state company.

At the cabinet meeting, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea said that the initiative stemmed from the need to develop the state-owned Giurgiulesti Port by increasing its capacity to handle international freight flows and diversifying the types of logistical activities conducted.

The established Commission will evaluate the opportunity for the extension and development of port infrastructure, including spaces meant for storing goods, import, export and transit of goods, in accordance with the national public interest.

“The Commission's activity will provide solutions for the expansion of the state-owned Giurgiulesti Port, which will determine the attraction of larger flows of goods and investments to the region and will create new opportunities for economic agents conducting commercial activities in the national and international transport sector,” said Vladimir Bolea.

Representatives of central and local public authorities will be members of the Commission.

“This is a very important project for the national economy,” emphasized Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The Giurgiulesti Port Complex is composed of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port and the Giurgiulesti Passenger and Cargo Port (PPMG). PPMG is a multifunctional river-sea port, managed by the state, with access to the maritime sector of the Danube, having an outlet to the Black Sea through the Sulina Channel (RO) and through the Bystroe Channel (UA), operating according to the model of small-sized ports, handling all types of dry goods.
