Moldovan, Greek officials discuss boosting use of Vertical Gas Corridor

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu and Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou approached opportunities for economic cooperation, especially in the energy sector and the possibility of boosting the use of the Vertical Gas Corridor.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the officials reviewed developments in the energy sector and opportunities for cooperation between states, as well as at the company level, in areas such as energy efficiency works for buildings, renewable energy sources, and possible assistance in transposing the community acquis.

The Greek official expressed the interest of Greek companies to invest in renewable energy projects in Moldova, as well as openness for cooperation in using hydrogen .

Junghietu thanked the Greek side for the support in piloting the liquefied natural gas terminal at Alexandroupolis and expressed interest in continuing its use to diversify Moldova's natural gas sources. In April 2024, Energocom was among the beneficiaries of the first liquefied natural gas transport docked at Alexandroupolis LNG terminal, transporting natural gas through the Vertical Corridor to store it in underground storage facilities in Ukraine.

Tasos Chatzivasileiou said that LNG terminal, together with the natural gas transport infrastructure played an important role in the geopolitical situation of the region, contributing to the enhancement of its energy security. In this context, Greece supported Moldova's accession to the Vertical Corridor, alongside Ukraine and Slovakia, in 2024.
