PHOTO // Ungheni Bridge over Prut takes shape: physical progress of works reaches 55%

Construction works on Ungheni bridge over the Prut River continue at a steady pace, with progress reaching 55%. On the construction site in the Republic of Moldova, installation of the first metal deck section on lane 2 has begun.

Ungheni site was inspected by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea together with Secretaries of State Mircea Păscăluță and Nicolai Mândra.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, installation of the first metal deck section on lane 2 has started on the Moldovan side of the site. So far, approximately 251 tons of metal decking have been delivered for both lanes of the bridge. The visit continued at the construction site in Iași County, where installation of the deck is already 70% complete on both lanes, with approximately 732 tons of metal decking delivered and installed.

Ungheni–Ungheni bridge is the first motorway-level road bridge built over the Prut in more than 60 years. It will ensure a direct connection between the Republic of Moldova and Romania via the A8 Union Motorway, which will cross the Carpathians, and via a future motorway to Chișinău.

The new infrastructure will facilitate the transport of goods and people between the two states and will more effectively integrate the Republic of Moldova into the European transport network.

The project is financed by the European Union, which has allocated 35 million euros through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
