Marcel Spatari: European integration is not just political objective, it is choice of civilization. Moldova must speed up harmonization of legislation with EU standards
The Republic of Moldova must continue aligning with European Union standards at an accelerated pace, stated Marcel Spatari, the president of the Parliamentary Commission for European Integration. He emphasized that accession means not only harmonizing legislation but also a profound transformation of how the country is governed.
"The speed at which we are moving, as shown by the enlargement report, is good, but the starting point is still distant from the ultimate goal – accession and full harmonization of legislation with European standards," mentioned Spatari.
Marcel Spatari listed three major objectives for the upcoming period. The first is to accelerate accession negotiations and meet the technical criteria.
"I know that the teams from agencies, from ministries, have been working, as the Prime Minister has said, they have been working days and nights and weekends on the bilateral screening with the European Commission. Now, the next stage is the harmonization of legislation, the implementation of mechanisms, and the time, the working capacity that was invested in screening, will now be invested in accelerating the transposition of the European Union's acquis."
The second objective is ensuring an economic convergence dynamic with EU member states.
"We know that the level of economic development measured, in terms of gross product per inhabitant, is still insufficient to ensure a standard of living for citizens comparable to the average standard in the European Union, and for this, we must continue to invest, to grow. It is important to show a convergence dynamic, to show that we are investing in sustainable infrastructure, in digitalization, in innovation and, of course, in partnership with the European Union, with member countries and European institutions," the official remarked.
The last objective mentioned by Marcel Spatari is involving the entire society in the integration process, alongside local public authorities, authorities at all levels, and all institutions.
"We must ensure the widest possible consensus in society on the process of European integration, therefore we must ensure transparency, participation in this process, the workload is very large, but we must do it right, we must advance together with the whole society. European integration is more than a political objective, it is a choice of civilization. I have often said it, the European Union is the greatest peace project in human history, and this is something we must keep in mind," the official stated.
Marcel Spatari specified that, as the president of the Commission for European Integration, he will support the Government and public institutions in the process of transposing European legislation and implementing the National Accession Program.
In the context of November 11, Marcel Spatari made a symbolic parallel between the significance of the armistice that ended the World War I and the beginning of a united Europe around the values of peace and culture.
"For us, this day also marks the beginning of a period of intense work. The enlargement report is a signal of encouragement and a source of energy for our efforts to join the European Union," concluded Marcel Spatari.
