EUDS chair: Moldova must be supported to decide freely, without coercion or manipulation
The Republic of Moldova deserves full and unconditional support from the European Union to maintain its freedom, independence, and European path, said Nathalie Loiseau, Chair of the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield (EUDS). The statement was made during an official visit to Chișinău this week by a delegation of the European Parliament.
The visit aimed to document how the Republic of Moldova manages hybrid threats, foreign disinformation, and cyberattacks, as well as to assess the support provided by the European Union in these critical areas.
“We are witnessing an alarming increase in attacks on democracies globally. The Republic of Moldova has shown remarkable resilience in the face of these sophisticated threats. We discussed with authorities, civil society representatives, and journalists about how we can combat aggressive interferences, especially those coming from the Russian Federation. It is essential that Moldova is supported to make its own choices, without coercion or manipulation, alongside partners who respect its sovereignty and European vision,” stated Nathalie Loiseau, a representative of the Renew Europe group.
The European Parliament delegation was composed of MEPs Mika Aaltola (EPP), Eugen Tomac (Renew Europe), and Siegfried Mureșan (EPP), the latter also acting as president of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee.
During the visit, the European officials met with Speaker Igor Grosu, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov, as well as with ministers Doina Nistor (economic development and digitalization), Dan Perciun (education and research), Dorin Junghietu (energy), and Ana Revenco, director of the Center for Strategic Communication and Combating Disinformation.
The delegation also held discussions with representatives of civil society and the media, in a joint effort to better understand the challenges facing the Republic of Moldova in strengthening democracy and information security.
On September 28, parliamentary elections will be held in the Republic of Moldova.
