Moldovan foreign affairs minister, on events in Venezuela, says it is essential to ensure democratic transition due to meet needs, interests of people

The legitimacy of the regime led by Nicolas Maduro has long been contested both domestically and internationally. In light of recent events, it is essential "to ensure a democratic transition that will meet the needs and interests of the Venezuelan people." Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi conveyed a message to this effect on 3 January evening.

This marks the first official reaction from Chisinau, following the capture of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in an operation organized by the United States of America.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi emphasized that Moldova "supports the right of the Venezuelan people to democracy and freedom."

"The legitimacy of Maduro's regime has been contested for a long time, both internally and internationally. We support the right of the Venezuelan people to democracy and freedom. It is essential to ensure a democratic transition that will meet the needs and interests of the Venezuelan people," stated Mihai Popsoi.

On January 3 morning, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured and taken out of the country. The operation was organized by the USA. They were to be transported to New York, where they have been indicted.

The two are allegedly charged with "conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, as well as conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices aimed against the United States."

During a press conference organized late on January 3, American President Donald Trump said that the United States of America "will lead Venezuela" until a "proper and safe transition" can take place in the country.
