Deputy Prime Minister: We are confident and hopeful that new year will be year of peace – lasting, just and sustainable peace

We are confident and very hopeful that the new year will be a year of peace. Surely, everyone desires peace, a lasting peace, a just and sustainable peace. We are committed and open to facilitating this process. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi made the statements in an interview given to MOLDPRES.

“We wish for peace to return to the Ukrainian lands and our region, and certainly the Ukrainian citizens and leadership desire this as well. However, the process is complex, considering the complexity of the war, its extremely painful impact, and the duration over time, the destruction that has occurred. We are confident and very hopeful that the new year will be a year of peace, because these almost four years have borne the deep imprint of war, both in humanitarian and economic terms. Surely, everyone desires peace, a lasting peace, a just and sustainable peace. We are certainly committed and open to facilitating this process,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned that there is no risk of the Republic of Moldova being included in international discussions regarding peace in Ukraine without the participation of Chișinău.

“There is no such risk. We are making efforts to ensure that no discussion about the Republic of Moldova can occur without Chișinău’s participation. We have ensured this both in Washington and in European capitals. All our partners understand very well that in the context where the Republic of Moldova is discussed, it is absolutely necessary for the country to be represented and to be part of these discussions. It is important politically, in terms of respecting sovereignty, but also practically, because otherwise, we cannot count on the success of the process. The Republic of Moldova has active diplomacy, and thanks to these efforts, we are assured that in the processes that will take place, the national interest of the Republic of Moldova will be considered,” emphasized the head of Moldovan diplomacy.

At the same time, Mihai Popșoi stated that a potential Peace Agreement in Ukraine “will create favorable circumstances for the Republic of Moldova, and these post-war circumstances will provide a significant boost for economic development in our country.” The official added that the Republic of Moldova is willing to become a logistical center for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

“We are confident that the Peace Agreement, which we hope will be signed as soon as possible, will create favorable circumstances for the Republic of Moldova, and these post-war circumstances will provide a significant boost for economic development in our country. We are willing to continue serving as a hub, a logistical center for Ukraine's reconstruction. We have always been and remain a firm partner of Ukraine, providing humanitarian support and hosting a large number of Ukrainian refugees. We have also supported exports of wheat when the Black Sea and the port of Odessa were blocked. We will continue to provide this support,” emphasized Mihai Popșoi.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced he is going to meet on Sunday, December 28, with US President Donald Trump, in the context of intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the war triggered by Russia. The meeting is expected to take place at Trump's residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
