Romania's president on first official visit to Chișinău

President of Romania Nicușor Dan is paying his first official visit to Chișinău, thus marking a new chapter in the strategic partnership between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Analyst Mihai Isac told MOLDPRES that this visit represents "a clear confirmation of the priority of the Republic of Moldova on the foreign policy agenda of the new administration in Bucharest" and sends a message to both allies and hostile actors in the region.

"Romania's support is indispensable for the Republic of Moldova in the process of European integration, as well as in its external relations and security architecture," emphasized Mihai Isac.

Bilateral Projects and Diplomatic Continuity

The visit takes place in the context of intense bilateral cooperation, supported by dozens of projects implemented between the two sides of the Prut River. The official delegation includes high-ranking representatives of the Romanian state, who will have meetings aimed at streamlining collaboration in key areas.

"President Nicușor Dan's presence in Chișinău demonstrates the capacity of the two capitals to work together, and this strategic axis anchors the Republic of Moldova more firmly in the European space," the analyst said.

Moreover, the president's visit takes place before his participation in the Ukraine–South-Eastern Europe summit in Odesa, scheduled for June 11, an event in which Romania reaffirms its role as a key state on the eastern flank of the European Union and NATO.

Romania, a Constant Ally of Chișinău

This is the first official visit by Nicușor Dan as president, honoring the tradition that Romanian leaders begin their external mandates with a trip to Chișinău. According to Mihai Isac, this gesture reflects "the special and unique character of Romanian-Moldovan relations, founded on common history, language, and values."

"Considering our common history, the uniqueness of the relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, and the common linguistic space, it is clear that Romania wants the Republic of Moldova to become part of United Europe, of the Romanian and European space. Clearly, the Republic of Moldova needs to intensify its reform efforts in strategic areas such as justice and security. Bucharest understands, however, that these efforts are subject to both political pressures and those generated by the security situation in the region," Isac said.

Romania plays an essential role in supporting these efforts, both bilaterally, through expertise and institutional collaborations, and at the European level. "Romania is the strongest voice in support of the Republic of Moldova at the level of the European Parliament and the European Commission," the analyst emphasized.

The Stake: European Integration and the Well-being of Moldovan Citizens

"Regardless of whether the government has been led by liberal or social-democratic prime ministers, Chișinău has been consistently supported, despite internal difficulties in Romania, such as political crises or budgetary challenges," he said.

"Romania wants the Republic of Moldova to become as soon as possible part of United Europe and the living standards of Moldovan citizens, regardless of ethnicity, language, or religion, to reach the standards of the European Union," added Mihai Isac.

President of Romania Nicușor Dan will pay his first official visit to Chișinău on 11 June. The Romanian official will be received by President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu.

Nicușor Dan was elected President of Romania following the elections on May 18, being massively supported by Romanian citizens in the Republic of Moldova.
