VIDEO // Government to propose ending emergency state in Moldova; PM says situation stable, immediate pressures overcome

The government is set to approve, on April 22, the decision by which it will ask the parliament to end the state of emergency in the energy sector starting from April 25. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today said that the decision came after a difficult period in which the authorities had quickly intervened to protect the energy system and avoid major risks. According to the official, the proposal to repeal the state of emergency comes as “the situation is stable and immediate pressures have been overcome.”

“Tomorrow, at the cabinet meeting, we will take an important step. We will approve the decision by which we will ask the parliament to end the state of emergency in the energy sector, starting from April 25. I remind you that the state of emergency was declared on March 25, this year, for a period of 60 days. Thus, if this date is approved by the parliament, the emergency state will last exactly one month. This decision comes after a difficult period, in which we intervened quickly to protect the energy system and avoid major risks. Today, the situation is stable. We have energy, the system is working and the immediate pressures have been overcome,” said Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.

At the same time, the official noted that continued caution was necessary, as the regional context remains volatile and the government’s responsibility is to be prepared for any scenario. Under these conditions, once the state of emergency is lifted, the authorities will propose introducing a state of alert in the energy sector for a period of 60 days.

“This is a preventive measure, that will allow us to react quickly and only when necessary. I have said from the very beginning that the state of emergency is not an end in itself, but a temporary instrument. We withdraw it when conditions allow. And that is exactly what we are doing now. We celebrated the Holy Easter in safety and peace. We know how important it is for each family to have access to secure energy, and this will continue to be our priority,” the PM underlined.

The prime minister added that the exact date and format of the presentation to parliament of the Report on the actions taken during the state of emergency are to be established.

The parliament of Moldova established a nationwide state of emergency for a period of 60 days starting from March 25, 2026, at the government’s proposal, after the Isaccea–Vulcanesti overhead power line had been disconnected on March 23 evening, following attacks on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine.
