Moldovan MPs approve draft on development of Marculesti Airport's infrastructure
The Free International Airport Marculesti will be modernized, becoming operational for both cargo transport and passenger flights. The MPs today approved, in the first reading, a draft law that provides for the development of the infrastructure of this airport from north Moldova.
The draft, developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, in partnership with the Public Property Agency, provides for the transfer of the Marculesti Airport under the administration of the State Enterprise Chisinau International Airport, for coordinated management and more efficient attraction of investments.
The investments necessary for the modernization of the airport are estimated at 4.2 million euros and the goal is to meet the growing demand for air services, including on behalf of low-cost operators.
According to the authors of the project, this initiative will support the diversification of national airport infrastructure and will contribute to the development of the northern region of Moldova.
Located at a distance of about 150 km far from Chisinau, the Marculesti Airport has a runway with a higher load-bearing capacity than the one of the Chisinau International Airport, allowing it to operate larger aircrafts.
Presently, the airport's activity includes aeronautical taxation services and the rental of current spaces.
