PM-designate: Moldova has one of most independent press in region
Prime Minister-designate Alexandru Munteanu stated during parliamentary hearings that the Republic of Moldova enjoys a high level of press freedom and the future government will fully comply with media legislation.
The statement was made in the Legislative assembly following a question from Deputy Adela Răileanu, who requested details on the Executive's objectives regarding the media and the Council previously accused of contributing to the suspension of licenses for some independent TV channels.
'I can tell you, first and foremost, as a simple citizen of the Republic of Moldova who has traveled and seen many countries, that I have not encountered a more independent press, in all senses—both in a good sense and in the least comfortable for a politician—than in the Republic of Moldova. I have learned more about myself in the last two weeks than in my entire life,' Munteanu said.
At the same time, the official emphasized that his government will act strictly within the limits of the law regarding media activity.
'My response, as the designated Prime Minister, is simple: all decisions and actions of the Executive will be made in accordance with the law,' he declared.
Asked about the Media Development Strategy, the only objective mentioned in the governing program, Munteanu noted that the document will be developed after public consultations and will include proposals to strengthen the independence and economic sustainability of the press.
