Victims of organized famine in Bessarabia in 1946–1947 commemorated in Avdarma

The victims of the organized famine in Bessarabia during 1946-1947 were commemorated in Avdarma (Gagauzia), where hundreds of people suffered. The event included a flower laying ceremony at Corner of Sorrow Memorial and a scientific-practical debate on Famine, Stalinist repressions and deportations.

The museum in Avdarma hosts an impressive collection of exhibits: photographs, official documents, letters and personal items of those who survived the famine and deportations. Over 800 people perished in Avdarma due to the famine, and 15 families were deported to Siberia.

Vasilisa, aged 84, lost her father and three brothers during that terrible time.

"In those years, we ate grass, we had no fire, no food... My father left and never returned. My brothers died of hunger. My mother cried every day. They took everything from us. Three tons of grain were taken from us...", she said.

The event brought together history specialists, researchers and members of the local community in a joint effort to restore historical truth and cultivate collective memory regarding the atrocities of the totalitarian-communist regime.

"Days of remembrance and collective memory are more than just commemorations – they are commitments for the future. It is our duty to keep this memory alive, to learn from it, and to build a society where such atrocities can no longer occur. The culture of memory is a pillar of a united and dignified Moldova," Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan said.

Throughout April, commemorative actions are taking place in the Republic of Moldova: documentary film screenings, traveling exhibitions, public discussions and educational activities. The Ministry of Culture urges the public to participate in these events – for truth, memory, dignity.
