World Water Day // Moldovan Environment Ministry urges citizens to use water resources rationally

Water is the most essential resource for life, but because of the climate change and improper use, the sources of drinking water are increasingly affected and limited. On World Water Day, marked on March 22, the Environment Ministry calls on citizens to use water resources rationally.

The Environment Ministry urges each citizen to use water carefully, every day, in all activities.

“Let's preserve it for ourselves and future generations. Either it is about the saving of water in households, in industry, or in agriculture, each action matters. Through small gestures, such as turning off the tap when not in use, using water-efficient equipment or choosing more economical irrigation ways, we can significantly contribute to protecting this vital resource,” the institution said in a posting on a social network.

The main sources of water supply for Moldova (safer and of higher quality) stay the Dniester and Prut rivers. The smaller rivers, in addition to having very low flow rates, are polluted and highly polluted, while the groundwater (in over 90 per cent of cases) has a mineralization that exceeds 1.5 g/l.

According to estimates by the Agency for Geology and Mineral Resources, the overall reserves of groundwater are estimated at about 3,500 cubic metres/day. However, due to the very high mineralization of most of these resources, the approved reserves for the supply with technical drinking water are estimated at only 73 cubic metres/day.

The World Water Day is annually marked on March 22. The decision to establish this day was taken at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in December 1992.
