PM: As of April 2025, Moldova to issue new European model ID card
Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced today good news for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova, both in the country and abroad: a new type of identity card, European model will be available from April.
According to the Prime Minister, the government is offering one million identity cards for free to those who apply in the usual manner. The new ID card is not mandatory but will gradually replace the current ones. They can be applied for from the age of 14. The new ID card no longer includes the residence visa, so citizens will not need to change their documents with each new address. The new card contains an electronic signature. "This means that any citizen, regardless of where they are, any entrepreneur, can access online government e-services, without queuing at institutions, without needing a Moldovan phone card," Recean said.
"On our way to joining EU, the new identity cards will be usable for crossing borders without additional documents. I encourage you to apply for the new ID card and take advantage of the fact that the state offers it free of charge for the first million citizens," Recean said.
