ASP head: Citizens to be able to apply for European-style identity card at ASP offices as of 2 April

After the declaration by Prime Minister Dorin Recean on new type of European-style identity card, the head of the Public Services Agency (ASP), Mircea Eșanu, came this morning, before the cabinet meeting, with explanations and details about the new document.

Eșanu displayed the first sample of the new type of identity card, which will be available from 2 April 2025. "Citizens will be able to approach ASP offices next week to request the document," the director of the Public Services Agency said.

"I take this opportunity to show you the first real sample of the new national document. I want to make a few remarks, the law comes into effect on 31 March. We will reserve two days for 31 March and 1 April, during which we will ensure that the entire process works correctly. From 2 April, citizens can already approach the Public Services Agency offices to request the document. The free issuance of the identity card, along with the electronic signature and card reader will be issued within a regular term, meaning within 20 working days," Eșanu said.

Recean announced today for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova, from the country and diaspora that as of April 2025, a new type of European-style identity card can be requested.

According to the Prime Minister, the government provides one million identity cards for free to those who request them in the ordinary process. The new identity card is not mandatory but will gradually replace the current cards. You can request it starting at age 14. It no longer includes a residence visa, so citizens will not need to change their documents with each new address. The new identity card contains an electronic signature.

"This means that any citizen, regardless of where they are, any entrepreneur will be able to access online governmental electronic services. On our path to joining the European Union, the new identity cards can be used to cross borders without additional documents. I encourage you to request the new identity card and take advantage of the fact that the state offers it for free to the first million citizens," Recean said.
