Sergiu Musteata takes over office of Secretary-General of Moldova's National Commission for UNESCO
Sergiu Musteata has assumed the role of Secretary-General of the National Commission of Moldova (CNRM) for UNESCO, during a crucial period for promoting UNESCO values, both at the national and international levels. His appointment marks a new chapter for the institution, which has operated successfully since September 1993.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the National Commission for UNESCO, under the leadership of former Secretary-General Constantin Rusnac, has been a pillar in promoting education, science, culture and protection of heritage in Moldova. In its 32 years of work, the Commission has attracted extra-budgetary resources and strengthened international partnerships for educational and cultural projects.
Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan thanked Constantin Rusnac for his contributions, highlighting the efficiency and professionalism with which he led the Commission.
“We express our most sincere gratitude to Mr. Constantin Rusnac for his dedication and exceptional contribution to strengthening Moldova’s position within UNESCO. Under his leadership, the Commission has become an example of efficiency and professionalism,” said Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan.
Sergiu Musteata, the new Secretary-General, will continue ongoing projects and will expand international cooperation, with special emphasis on protecting national heritage, especially in the context of the security situation in the region. Prodan highlighted the importance of the Commission, considering the threats to heritage because of the war in Ukraine.
“This commission is extremely important. Especially in the current conditions of war in the neighboring country, there is an immense threat to heritage assets. Transporting valuables from Ukraine and countering illicit trafficking of heritage objects are common tasks,” emphasized the minister.
Sergiu Musteata, an archaeologist and university professor, has been instrumental in including Moldova's underground wineries in UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The minister of culture ensured full governmental support for the success of the new leadership.
