Moldova to set up emergency petroleum product stocks

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu visited today the oil terminal at Giurgiulești International Free Port, the main route for importing petroleum products into Moldova. The official gathered information on the port's storage capacities in the context of plans to create emergency petroleum product stocks starting from 2026.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the stocks will exceed 200,000 tons, sufficient for 90 days of average net daily import or 61 days of consumption.

Commissioned in 2007, the oil terminal is equipped with a quay on the Danube, eight tanks, truck loading facilities that allow simultaneous loading of up to four trucks, and a mixed gauge railway loading/unloading facility. The total storage capacity of the petroleum product tank park is over 63,000 cubic meters, with five tanks used for diesel storage and three for petrol storage.

Additionally, the Energy Minister discussed with the port operator about the industrial park development plans, which currently hosts 50 residents with investments amounting to 137 million euros and over 820 jobs created.

Giurgiulești Port is a strategically important logistics hub, offering transshipment and storage services for importers and exporters, with access to a trimodal transport infrastructure. The port is located on the maritime sector of the Danube river and allows docking of river and sea vessels with a draft of up to 7 meters and a capacity of up to 10,000 tons. Moreover, the port is well connected with wide and narrow gauge railway lines. The port was put into operation on October 26, 2006, after ten years of construction.
