European Council President says Moldova ready for next steps in EU accession process

European Council President Antonio Costa shas said that Moldova had proved remarkable progress in its reform path and was ready to open the accession negotiations, starting with the chapter on fundamental values.

During the first Moldova – European Union Summit, held in Chisinau, the European official conveyed a clear message of support:

“The European Council congratulates Moldova on all the success achieved. Now it is time to accelerate this work and take the next steps towards accession,” said Costa.

According to the President of the European Council, joining the European Union is not “a box-ticking exercise,” but a deep commitment to sustainable reforms that bring tangible benefits to citizens:

“These efforts open real opportunities for people – from visa regime liberalization, to investment in infrastructure, to direct support for energy systems.”

Antonio Costa listed a string of tangible achievements supported by the EU in recent years:

• 70 million euros for compensating heating invoices and

• 30 million euros for supporting electricity costs in the previous winter;

• 700 km of roads and 200 km of railways rehabilitated;

• Renovation of 22 hospitals and 120 schools.

The European leader emphasized the joint commitment to accelerate Moldova's integration into the European Union Single Market, to support economic growth, business development and creation of jobs.

“The EU stays a reliable, predictable partner supporting Moldova in good and difficult times. We will continue to strengthen the country's security and resilience,” said Costa.

In conclusion, the President of the European Council delivered a strong message about Moldova’s European future:

“The choices of Moldova should belong to the Moldovan citizens and not to those who want to manipulate or undermine democracy. Europe stands with you – for a free, safe and value-based Europe.”

The European Commission will release the first installment of 270 million euros from the Growth Plan for Moldova, with a total value of 1.9 billion euros. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen made statements to this effect in her speech given at the first Moldova - European Union Summit, held in Chisinau on July 4.
