BTA: Head of State Radev to Leave President's Administration Building on January 23
Rumen Radev will leave the President's administration building at 4 p.m. on Friday, the press office of the head of State said Thursday. Radev will be seen off at the main entrance of the institution by Vice President Iliana Iotova, who will take over as President after the Constitutional Court's ruling.
Radev announced his decision to resign the presidency on January 19 in an address to the nation. He tendered his resignation to the Constitutional Court on January 20. On the same day, the court opened a case on the resignation.
Under Article 97 of the Constitution, the president of the Republic may tender his resignation to the Constitutional Court prior to the expiry of his term of office. In such case, the vice president must assume the office of president for the remainder of the term of office. Within a period at its discretion, the Constitutional Court must decide whether the president has resigned of their own accord. If this is the case, the president's credentials will be terminated, and the vice president will step in.
