Germany and Romania support European path of Moldova

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union during a press conference held together with Romania’s Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, in which the German official reiterated Berlin’s support for keeping open Chișinău’s European perspective.

Friedrich Merz recalled that he paid a visit to Chișinău in August 2025, on the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova, together with President of France and Prime Minister of Poland, when he held talks with President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu, and took part in the public events dedicated to the national holiday. According to the German Chancellor, the message conveyed then regarding Moldova’s European perspective remains valid after the elections as well, and the expectations of Moldovan citizens must not be ignored.

“ I spoke in front of 80,000 Moldovan citizens and I also spoke about Moldova’s European perspective. I have taken note of the election results and we want to keep Moldova’s road towards Europe open even after these elections. It must be clear that we cannot disappoint Moldovan citizens who want to join the European Union,” stated Friedrich Merz.

For his part, Romania’s Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stressed that the Republic of Moldova represents a strategic priority for Bucharest. He noted that the stability of Chișinău and the advancement of its European path are relevant not only for the Republic of Moldova, but also for the entire region.

“ The stability of Chișinău and its European path matter for the entire region. In this context, the role of the European Union is essential, and the opening of accession negotiations as soon as possible would be an important signal for citizens and for regional security,” said Ilie Bolojan.

The Republic of Moldova obtained candidate status for accession to the European Union in June 2022, and in December 2023 the European Council decided to open accession negotiations. In September 2025, the Republic of Moldova completed the bilateral screening process with the European Commission, an essential stage in the framework of the EU accession negotiations, which involved an analysis of national legislation in relation to the EU acquis. At present, Chișinău authorities are implementing key reforms in areas such as justice, the rule of law, the fight against corruption, public administration and economic development, in line with the commitments assumed in the European integration process.
