PHOTO // Deputy Prime Minister in Strasbourg: Moldova committed to addressing gender-based disinformation as threat to democracy

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi took part in an event dedicated to gender equality and disinformation, held during the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). The meeting was attended by PACE President Petra Bayr, Venice Commission President Marta Cartabia and Director General of Democracy and Human Dignity (DGII) of the Council of Europe Marja Ruotanen.

In his speech, Mihai Popșoi spoke about our country’s experience in managing the challenges related to combating disinformation and reiterated Moldova’s commitment to promoting and protecting fundamental human rights, as well as to supporting the equal participation of women in decision-making processes, both at the national and international levels.

“Multilateral cooperation is essential, as gender-based disinformation often forms part of coordinated, cross-border campaigns that no country can counter on its own. In exercising the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Republic of Moldova is committed to addressing gender-based disinformation as a threat to democracy, human rights and social cohesion, and to promoting coordinated actions to face this challenge,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

The event was organized in the context of the International Day of Women in Multilateralism, marked annually on 25 January since 2021. It was established by UNESCO to recognize the essential contribution of women to the promotion of human rights, peace and sustainable development within the global multilateral system.
