Moldovan president congratulates acting Armenian PM on securing parliamentary majority

President Maia Sandu today congratulated acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on his party’s victory in the parliamentary elections, “despite massive foreign interference.” The head of state noted that she “wants to deepen the dialogue between the two countries.”

The official underlined that Moldova and Armenia shared a common commitment to peace and stability in Europe.

“I extend my sincere congratulations on your electoral victory, achieved despite massive foreign interference. Moldova and Armenia share a common commitment to peace and stability in Europe, and I look forward to deepening our dialogue and working closely together in the years to come,” Maia Sandu said.

The last Sunday elections took place after years of profound upheaval in Armenia and Pashinyan’s rise to power following 2018 demonstrations, when he pledged to dismantle a post-Soviet oligarchic system.

The Central Electoral Commission announced, after all votes were counted, that Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract Party defeated the Strong Armenia Alliance of Russian-Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, with 49.8 per cent versus 23.3 per cent of the votes cast.

The Armenian parliament has 105 seats. Following the elections, Nikol Pashinyan’s party got a majority of mandates, allowing it to form the government and for him to remain prime minister. Nikol Pashinyan has led Armenia since 2018.
