Moldovan president says Moldova stands in solidarity with courageous people of Iran, who are fighting for freedom, dignity

President Maia Sandu has conveyed a message of solidarity with the people of Iran, praising the courage of citizens who are taking a stand for freedom and democratic elections.

“I am thinking of the courageous people of Iran, who are raising their voices for freedom, dignity and democratic elections. Their determination to shape their own future resonates far beyond their borders. Moldova stands in solidarity with them,” Maia Sandu stated on the X platform.

The protests began on 28 December 2025 and intensified 9 January, in Tehran and in more other cities across Iran. Demonstrators are calling for an end to clerical rule and, in some cases, for the restoration of the monarchy. Many Iranians from all walks of life have expressed anger at the religious leadership that has dominated the country for nearly half a century, according to the BBC.

In the context of the demonstrations, the exiled crown prince of Iran has called for increased pressure on those in power and for a general strike, encouraging protesters to use national symbols. At the same time, the Iranian authorities have restricted internet access and boosted security measures, including threats of death sentences, while state television broadcasts images of clashes and fires.

Human rights groups report at least 62 deaths since the start of the protests, including 48 protesters and 14 members of the security forces. Damaged economies, the devaluation of the rial and inflation of over 40 per cent in December 2025 have heightened public discontent.

The United States and former political leaders, including President Donald Trump, have issued warnings to the authorities in Tehran, but have stopped short of providing direct support to the opposition. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed not to give in and has accused the protesters of acting under the influence of groups from abroad.

Maia Sandu’s message underscores Moldova’s solidarity with people who are defending their dignity and fundamental rights at a moment of major tension for the Iranian society.
