VIDEO // Bucharest supports accelerating European Integration of the Republic of Moldova

Romania reaffirms its support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova and calls for accelerating the process of accession to the European Union, including through the opening of negotiation chapters. Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Țoiu made the statement at the opening of the 135th Ministerial Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

“Romania is a country deeply committed to this European path. We have seen the reforms carried out by the Republic of Moldova, and it is very clear that, at this moment, all negotiation chapters must be opened,” Oana Țoiu declared.

The Romanian official emphasized that the same message of support also targets other states in the region that are on a European trajectory.

“Negotiations must be opened with Ukraine as well, and we must also make progress with the Western Balkans,” the minister noted.

She stressed that the enlargement of the European Union is not only a technical process, but also a matter of credibility and political commitment at the European level.

“We are not talking only about a responsibility towards the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, or the Western Balkans. We are also talking about the promise that the European Union has made. We are talking about the European Union’s position in the world,” she mentioned.

In her view, accelerating the accession process is also important from the perspective of regional security, in the context of hybrid threats and the instability generated by the war in Ukraine.

“We cannot risk that the countries in the region may no longer cope with hybrid threats and interferences coming from other states. European integration is the way through which we ensure this collective security,” Oana Țoiu said.

The minister also announced her participation in a roundtable together with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova Mihai Popșoi, where topics such as democratic resilience, combating disinformation, and protecting electoral processes will be discussed.

At the same time, the head of diplomacy in Bucharest reaffirmed support for European initiatives dedicated to citizens in states under external influence, emphasizing the importance of access to dialogue and international partnerships.

The Republic of Moldova is hosting today the 135th Ministerial Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. More than 50 delegations from member states are expected at the event, including over 20 foreign ministers.

The meeting is taking place at the Palace of the Republic in the center of the capital. It will reflect the priorities assumed by our country during its presidency and will include topics such as: continued support for Ukraine, with a focus on reconstruction, combating disinformation and foreign interference, strengthening security, and enhancing democratic resilience.

Furthermore, the ministers will discuss the Democratic Pact for Europe, the future external action strategy of the Council of Europe, migration, and the strengthening of international cooperation and multilateralism.

The Republic of Moldova took over the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 14 November 2025. The mandate is exercised by our country for a period of six months, until 15 May of the current year. This is the second time the state holds this responsibility, the first Presidency being exercised in 2003.

The Republic of Moldova became a member of the Council of Europe on 13 July 1995.
