VIDEO // Moldovan PM in Kyiv says Moldova, Ukraine strengthening economic, energy, European partnership

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, currently on an official visit to Kyiv, has made joint statements with his Ukrainian counterpart Yuliia Svyrydenko. The two PMs referred to deepening bilateral cooperation, European integration, regional security and concrete projects in the economic, energy and infrastructure sectors.

Partnership based on trust and common European objectives

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko thanked Moldovan prime minister for his willingness to visit Ukraine at a difficult time, underlining the high level of trust between the two states.

The Ukrainian official said that Moldova is a neighbor and a reliable partner, alongside whom Ukraine is advancing on the path of European integration.

“Bilateral cooperation will become an important component in the future integration into the European Union, a priority objective for both countries,” stressed Yuliia Svyrydenko.

During the negotiations, the sides discussed expanding trade and economic cooperation, agreeing to maintain a pragmatic and regular dialogue at governmental level. A central role will be played by the Moldovan-Ukrainian Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation, considered the main platform for solving practical problems between the states.

Infrastructure, transit and logistics projects

The governments of Moldova and Ukraine considered possibilities for developing freight transit and modernizing border infrastructure. Connectivity projects,  construction of bridges and facilitation of international transport were also discussed, as measures that are expected to contribute to the growth of bilateral trade.

The officials also addressed cooperation in regional logistics and transport, including the coordination of projects in the Odesa area and in the Black Sea region. According to the Ukrainian side, these initiatives are essential for regional economic stability and for maintaining supply chains.

Energy cooperation and gas storage

An important topic of the talks was the energy cooperation. Ukraine proposed expanding the use of its underground natural gas storage facilities by companies from Moldova. Ukrainian officials noted that the storage infrastructure is located at a considerable distance from the front line and offers advantageous storage conditions, including competitively priced services at the European level.

The sides also examined possibilities for collaboration to reduce energy risks and strengthen supply security, including information exchange and coordination in the field of energy infrastructure.

Solidarity and condemnation of the war

In his statement, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu expressed Moldova’s solidarity with Ukraine and firmly condemned the war launched by the Russian Federation.

The PM stressed that his visit also had a symbolic meaning, representing Chisinau’s support for the Ukrainian people, who are “on the front line of defending peace and universal human values.” The official highlighted the difficulties faced by Ukrainian citizens, including the destruction of infrastructure and interruptions in electricity, water and heating in the middle of winter.

“Russia has brought war into every Ukrainian home, and the attacks on civilian infrastructure and residential areas cause victims among the civilian population, including children and the elderly. I have returned with respect and solidarity for the Ukrainian people, who are on the front line defending peace and human values.  Moldova strongly condemns the war and the massive attacks that destroy critical infrastructure. We stay in solidarity and stand by Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Today, a new humanitarian shipment, approved by the government last week, is arriving in Kyiv,” said Alexandru Munteanu.

The aid package includes intervention vehicles, electric generators, protective equipment, medical supplies and food products, meant to support the population affected by the destruction of energy and civil infrastructure. The Moldovan official reiterated that Moldova was currently hosting over 130,000 Ukrainian refugees, of whom around 20,000 are children integrated into the education system, providing them with every necessary support through temporary protection mechanisms.

Regional cooperation and Black Sea security

The visit’s agenda included the signing of bilateral agreements meant to facilitate economic cooperation and secure logistics chains, thereby strengthening both states’ position as reliable partners in the Black Sea region and on their joint path toward the European Union.

The two prime ministers agreed to continue dialogue at the level of the relevant institutions and to develop trilateral and regional cooperation in the fields of transport, logistics and energy security.

According to their statements, Moldovan-Ukrainian cooperation will contribute to the stability and security of the Black Sea region and of the entire Eastern European region in a difficult geopolitical context.
