Former SIS Deputy Director to be extradited to Moldova

The former deputy director of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS), Alexandru Bălan, will be extradited to the Republic of Moldova. A decision to this effect was approved today by the judges of the Bucharest Court of Appeal. He was recently sentenced by the Chișinău Court to one year and six months in prison for attempted disclosure of state secrets.

According to Antena3.ro, the court ordered the extradition and handover to the judicial authorities of the Republic of Moldova of Romanian and Moldovan citizen Alexandru Bălan, for the execution of the imposed sentence.

The judges also ordered the arrest of Alexandru Bălan for 30 days, for the purpose of his handover. He agreed to be extradited.

On April 15 of this year, Alexandru Bălan was sentenced to one year and six months in prison for attempted disclosure of state secrets, in a case opened in the Republic of Moldova. The defendant admitted his guilt and requested that the case be examined under a simplified procedure.

According to official information, between 2024 and 2025, Alexandru Bălan allegedly met twice in Budapest with officers of the secret service of Belarus, being remunerated for his services and receiving new instructions. Details about the sums involved have not been made public.
